Like it's a pre-requisite these days to have a polished linkedin profile to even be considered for a bunch of positions.

No one real actually looks at it. It's either skimmed poorly by AI, or an army of salesforce cadets who were all promised they'd make amazing commissions and little pay if they go and spam everyone they possibly can on linkedin with AI giving them "targets" with very unreliably accuracy. It's all just stupid. Very Microsoft, such wow.

The platform is also useful to monitor opening positions and getting job alerts in your field. Apart from that, drama and weirdness exists but choosing who to follow (seasoned professionals in my case) can be pretty curated and sane. I've read interesting articles and opinion pieces as well, mostly from industry leaders.

Could I live without it? Sure.
