I have done this. As the other commenter said, soapy water might help. Heating them up with a heat gun or hair dyer might also help. I have sometimes made a small hole in a table or board, large enough for the rod but not the rubber rollers, and then slowly pressed the rod through the roller. I found slow, strong pressure works better than hitting the rod with a hammer (which I also tried). I have sometimes used a socket from a socket wrench set for the same purpose, and for pressure I have used (a) actual weights, (b) a shop press, (c) a bench vise, and (d) a screw clamp. Sometimes the length of the rod limits the options.
