My hopes that the "hourly cost" would mean the bill would come in below the advertised maximum did not work out. The bill is for $32.

I'm NOT complaining about Hetzner's rates here, but close to $400/year to run a rmeote server that's basically acting as a host for a pair og 4TB disks is a LOT of money for a homelabber working in academia like me.

So I may need to give up on the magic of ZFS replication and cave to using something like S3 with Glacier cold storage (I'll look into other cheaper vendors for this - I have no problem with paying my former employer but if I can save money I'm gonna do it

Unlike the zfs replica it's not as guaranteed but given that my off site backups are really a DR thing, I'm honestly not sure how much that should matter to me.

I thought about the zfs.rent situation - but with HDD prices SO insane right now, my wife would be VERY rightt to balk at my wanting to spend another $700 on top of the close to $3K I spent for NAS and drives.

Update: My thought that S3 storage might be cheaper was WAY out of line.

Backblaze B2, which I used to use to back up my Synology #NAS, is $6 per TB per month.

So it would be $24 to back up what I have now, and if I ever store more in my NAS (which has 40TB usable) it'll become cost p;rohibitive REALLY quick.

The backup thingie the Synology had, Hyperbackup, used to do a crazy amount of compression on the data.

Not sure what I'm gonna do about this.

I should probably submit a ticket t o @hetzner support to see how much adding extra disk would cost.
