In French it sounds a bit like Valkyri and the name was invented to make fun of the German during the first world War (the valkyri was the emblem of the German troop transports).

They take the leftovers and scraps left after processing actual cheese and instead of putting them in the trash where they belong, they melt it to get this (with some shit added for texture / taste). So, definitely better than American.
