Project Hail Mary is also popular right now because of the movie, and it *is* a really good book, but there's some talk going around about some quasi-political statements the author made in a recent interview that, in the most charitable interpretation, showed rather poor judgment. So that one comes with a bit of an asterisk.

diazona@techhub.social

Reply to Looking for book recommendations. on Mon, 11 May 2026 05:10:27 GMT

@askDNA Hmm, well, hard to know what you might enjoy without some idea of what genres or themes you like, but in general I would happily recommend either of my two all-time favorite series, both fantasy:
1. Dragon Blood by Lindsay Buroker, starting with "Balanced on the Blade's Edge" (which you can probably find free in eBook format somewhere)
2. the Dark Lord Davi duology by Django Wexler, starting with "How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying"

There's also Legends and Lattes and its sequels, and Monk and Robot, and Murderbot (that one being more sci-fi), all of which are quite popular and I think would be appreciated by someone wanting a break from nonfiction. And none of these are really "heavy" reading either, which makes them better candidates for a first foray into fiction than something like Lord of the Rings or Mistborn (both also very good but much more complex).

#books #bookstodon

diazona@techhub.social

Reply to Looking for book recommendations. on Mon, 11 May 2026 05:04:53 GMT

@askDNA I recommend A Long Way To A Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.

ooze@wirejunkie.net

Reply to Looking for book recommendations. on Mon, 11 May 2026 05:03:00 GMT

@askDNA “The Prince of Tides” by Conner

mrbadger42@mastodon.world

Reply to Looking for book recommendations. on Mon, 11 May 2026 05:01:00 GMT

@askDNA I’ve been reading books from Michael Connelly.
