The Microsoft tech sent to school us on Win2.11 in '89 was very blunt about this: Windows should never be used to access untrusted sites. On the subject of impacts to home users, he was equally blunt: they account for only a small sliver of their revenue.

In all the years since, I haven't noticed any change.

I haven't kept up on this but i know years ago many Latin American countries let Facebook give their users zero rate data meaning Facebook is free Internet, and the only Internet many people can afford.

Hell, Meta is the one doing the bulk of the lobbying for all the recent KYC laws.

In fact, due to their monopoly positions, megacorps have a greater responsibility to be good stewards of the data they collect. But nobody's holding them responsible so lol i guess.

Also users may not even realize they're "using" MS/FB/Goog because of advertising crap and jerks wearing creeper-glasses. I'm not consenting to FB having my face, but if some asshole is wearing Zuck's perv-dongles I guess I don't get a say.

Our family is scatter all over the US and sometimes all over the world. Facebook offers them a stay in touch in a very rich way. It also funnels them garbage, and puts them at risk. These people may or may not know this and just yelling at them that they deserve what they get for being able to enjoy pictures that their grand children send them is wrong.
