During the 1961 Cuban Literacy Campaign, the US/CIA engaged in efforts to disrupt the program, which was seen as a key component of Fidel Castro's socialist transformation. While Cuban volunteers were teaching reading and writing in rural areas, US-paid mercenaries targeted and brutally murdered several literacy teachers, many of them teenagers.
