I routinely have a similar conversation with very self-critical students about performances, because of the tendency to respond to compliments with the litany of failures. Some kids need to practice, in order not to strip away the listener’s joy. Usually, “I’m glad you enjoyed it,” and the perennial fallback, “Thank you,” are things they can learn to say honestly.

I keep telling people that grenades are faster... but no one listens.
