I've been attending more of the social events that I always get invited to that I always back out of because I don't really like social events, just to soak up some optimism from some people who are optimistic, like sales folk and business makers and stuff like that.

Still, if I hear one more person start a premise with "when the LLMs become cheaper" I'm going to burst a sprocket. I stop myself most of the time from starting my sentences with "Oh, sweet summer child," but I get where they're coming from. I do. They need to think that this is going to get less expensive, like technology usually does, but I point out to them, "Hey, did cloud? No, it did not. It got more expensive, and there wasn't nearly the bubble involved. Your mileage may vary way more than you think."

I used to follow a lot of news cycles and informational things and it became too much.

I'm sorry you are having to deal with that, honestly. I know it's lame to say, but as a reminder - we aren't designed to deal with this. This is something a handful of seriously shitty people have decided they can get away with.

It's a PR push, something to get in the headlines, increase users, increase dependency on it, then BAM, if you can't afford the $200/mo subscription, no AI for you.

I think about this a lot as I work with my students, how are they going to fend when they can't sit and ask a chatbot to sort through a problem for them? Right now, they live in a world where that's a non-issue, but that won't always be the case.

I'm not looking for a home per se. I have several. I just need to use them a little differently right now because there's just so much pessimism out there, and it's all reasonable pessimism, but it's starting to impact my mental health a little bit, so I'm trying to balance it first before I go nuts.

I have never really been one that exhibits any symptoms of clinical depression, though I do have clinical anxiety. But depression has never really been my thing. This is about as close as I get with this whole situation in the world and the existential dread, and then the changes in the IT industry with AI and the amount of money that's moving hands, and it's just a lot.

For instance, you say how Anthropic is bragging about being profitable, but "profitable" is a tricky term when it comes to business. What that ignores is the $3 trillion that the big players in this are just swapping around constantly; that eventually will have to be matched with some actual value. And therein lies the rub. I question whether or not there will ever be such value to that level.

Claude is down and all I am hearing are people complaining about "not being able to work," what about when they up their sub to $40/month?

I've been trying to figure out how to enter into the world of TTRPGs, as a creator. Like you, I'm not social, and so it makes it difficult to branch out.

I've kind of got an idea of just putting a world out into the world.... and seeing if anyone cares? Sort of a "If you build it they will come" sort of thing?
