There are three rail connections northwards from Hamburg: on the west coast towards Husum and Sylt, via Rendsburg and via Eckernförde. That last one is the one I’m taking, though as the rail bridge is in deplorable condition and can’t take the weight of trains or cars anymore, you have to walk across. They’ve started construction on a new bridge which is planned to be ready in 2027 (but locals say they’ll believe that after they’ve crossed it).
