<![CDATA[Garden inches forward today.]]>Garden inches forward today. Got some undersized tomato seedlings into the ground, and protected from all the wildlife with a bit of wire screening.

K got several pots filled with flowers and they're looking very nice too.

Will continue to pick away at getting the gardens set up for summer this week.

That's the goal. Dried herbs, tomatoes, and peppers, for the pantry and pot. Chicken braised with summer savory, sundried Roma tomatoes for pizza.

I'm currently telling myself that the 30+ tomato plants in my yard is just a sensible adjustment for the fact that I no longer have a full-sun plot to put them in; I might get fewer tomatoes per plant but still a decent harvest?

But I didn't plan it like that; I just was planting old seed (like, 10 years old) and planted generously because I wasn't sure how well it would germinate, and then I didn't have the heart to thin them out. Anyway, they're not crowded with each other but they will have a fence full of peas behind them and sunflowers & kale squeezed tight in front of them. Natural tomato cages!

For my sins, I'm starting some of the hot peppers under lights. By next weekend, we should have the first thirty of the raised beds installed and ready to plant. I hope the tomato starters have been as lucky as we pepper (hot and sweet) starters. My bed will mostly have kitchen herbs but I have four blooming Roma in my window and will add what others are on offer on Opening Weekend.

But I also use my own poorly composted compost. This means that I get my toms, and millions of compost babies from random store boughters.
These get weeded of until only 8-12 compost babies remain. Makes harvest interesting because sometimes market toms don’t breed true.

This year – a reduced number, but still a few varieties.

Namely: Better Boy, San Marzano, Montreal Tasty, Dirty Girl (a non-monsanto version of Early Girl) and German Johnson.
