In short, it boils down to the fact that vegans are right and serve as a living mirror for people who actually feel guilty about their animal-unfriendly consumption.

Just accept that you are doing something wrong if you don't want to stop and let the vegetarians and vegans do their thing accepting that they, in this regard, do better than you. It's called ambiguity tolerance.

Wow, I would say your response was quite neutral. That person must have had doubts about that amount of meat on some level.
Back in the day, on the bird site, I commented rather Vegany on someone posting a picture of a big salami sausage. They actually appreciated that and we are still vague friends, ten years later. In fact, it's their birthday today.

Incidentally, vegetarians find vegans annoying too, because they do understand, to some extent, that consuming animal excretions is rather nonsensical.
