Like many Kyōto temples, it is also known as 'Hana-no-dera' (花の寺), the 'Temple of Flowers'.

I particularly love the fresh green maple leaves.

The origins of the temple are hazy, but it's thought the hermitage began as a dōjō called Ōjō-in (往生院 'Temple of Rebirth'), built by Ryōnin (良忍 1073-1132) to help spread Yūzū Nembutsu (融通念仏宗).
