I'm not sure where you get that from. But IEA data says:

- EIA data shows US imports 0.5 million barrels of crude oil per day via Strait of Hormuz: 7% of crude imports

That's not big enough number to justify such a huge jump in gas prices at the pump.

But it's the US, free market economy, anything to push for a higher price I guess

We export more LNG than crude.
We produce the wrong kind of crude to make gasoline. We trade it for refined gasoline.
All the crude used to make gasoline comes through the strait.

I don't understand it.

US is one of the biggest oil export countries.

They are selling oil like never before and there should be absolutely no impact in the access to oil in the country.

Why on earth have prices gone up so much?

Brent’s price has risen about $10 per barrel over the past week. The price for oil deliverable in June rose above $110 per barrel for the first time this month.

West Texas Intermediate [] , the benchmark, rose 5%, to around $101 a barrel, for June delivery.
