You stay there for a few days, you can come and go as you please except IIRC you are supposed to come back at meal times, there is privacy, there are people to talk to/resources if you want but it's not mandatory. At least that's how it worked many years ago when I stayed there. It is more like "staying at someone else's house for a weekend but you don't have to actually socialize" than an institution.

This is a huge "your mileage may vary" but simply being in the same space/watching to make sure they don't do anything may be enough and is at least better than nothing.

The US national one will call the cops last I heard. I don’t know for other countries unfortunately.
