In prep for some actual gaming I gathered together all the I've built over the past few years. I'll be honest, I'm disappointed in how little it actually is, but I'm aware I had planned a threefold.

Applied a layer of mod podge to all the XPS.

Primed the unpainted stuff grey with a rattle can.

Turns out mod podge does NOT protecc XPS😥

The solvent in the rattle can went right through it.

Silly thing is, I've been preoccupied by this exact outcome so long and planned to do a test piece that it's been on my mind so much that I thought I'd already done it 😆

Re: protect
the XPS foam went all crinkly because of the rattle can spray paint.

I had assumed a layer of mod podge would prevent that. Luckily like a good boy I spray the hard-to-reach places first, so only the inner wall of the gatehouse, mostly hidden under a walkway, has been affected.

Basically, there's stuff in the spray paint that can disintegrate expanded polystyrene, so you need to cover it in a layer of something that can withstand it. I tended to use plaster as a good base, but as others note, you need to make sure it covers it completely otherwise you end up with voids.

It also helps to spray from a little further away. I mix in some black paint with my mod podge to make sure I can see that it's all covered.
