Happens at least in Italy. I doubt anything prevents the hotel staff from making unauthorized copies of the scanned passport/ID images and give to criminals that pay them for the information.

My private address is freakibg sensitive if *I* feel it is, not when someone else feels it is (I mean you).
When I show my passport at a hotel, the recptionist doesn't keep a copy of it's number to lose it later on, but only checks I'm who I claim to be.

Seriously, what of those data items do you consider "secret"? Do you ever travel to countries where you need to show your passport or ID when checking in at a hotel, and they scan it?
