I waited for the launch, which was delayed, and eventually had to leave to catch a flight home. As luck would have it, the crew took off near the same time my plane did, so I was able to watch their ascent from the sky.

About a decade later I met John by chance through my work (he is super nice and humble), but I was too shy to tell him what that earlier cosmic experience meant to me. Apparently, he took an eagle feather and a Cherokee flute into space with him. Now, in keeping with that tradition, the Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen is wearing a badge on his flight suit that represents the Anishinaabe seven sacred teachings.
