No two alignments are going to pass each other at exactly the same angle I would have thought. I’d imagine perpendicular crossings are the exception.

The de Beaujeu diamond is at an angle. So not an off-the-shelf diamond CP/CN (at the time) bought at Costco, but specially forged 32 pieces for the 2 CP tracks/1 CN/VIA track) at the specific angle those tracks cross each other.

VIA has a siding just north/west of the diamond in case 2 of its trains in opposite directions are stopped by long slow CPKC train, so one train can pass through after tracks are cleared.

I could see how that would have been problematic. The UK only has one remaining diamond crossing, on the East Coast Main Line near Retford. Makes a hell of a thump when the train goes over it!

Work started 2012 and by 2015 CN's St Laurent sub passed over the Deux Montagnes line. This was a big project and AMT paid for double track capability on the CN line. And REM got that for free before AMT could start to increase frequencies after eliminating this bottleneck.

It paid to remove the diamond with the CN St-Laurent sub which limited frequencies. And had finnaly gotten approval to run the NJ Transit Multi Level cars through the tunnel for the Mascouche line and its goal was to deploy them on Deux Montagnes and increase frequency. Before that could happen, CDPQ happened and took everythin.

I do agree the REM has been something imposed on local populations without their consultation (likewise for bus alterations). I can only hope they’re smart enough to listen to feedback and make adjustments going forward.

With regards to the DM line I’d place much of the blame with the ATM of the day. The infrastructure was so underused it left the door wide open for someone to come along and propose a better use.

Single track.

CDPQ demolished bridge and rebuilt 2 separate ones , one for west island and one for dorval since tghey didn't reuse CN alignement to get to north end of dorval. CN later added spur to go south and reach northern edge of airport.

When announced the back-of-napkin plan was for tracks to continue along track alignment to cross Boul St-Jean and then cross over the 40 west of St-Jean. Eventually somone at CDPQ looked at Google and saw that the Home Depot had been built to block passage and they changed plans to cross the 40 well east of St-Jean.

Brossard: replaced existing Panama express buses overnight.

Deux Montagnes: deprived population of existing train service for 5 years for replacement with same stations.

West Island: imposes itself in ackward traffic-congested locations because it was more cost effective to use Québec-owned land along impassible major highway, disrupts transit that doesn't benefit from REM.
