My guess is his team are seeking to Angela Rayner's team to see if they can buy her off with a senior post - perhaps even Chancellor (or maybe not)?

No doubt all will become clearer as the day(s) progresses.

Which he would have done, if he had the numbers. Now he is trying to save some face by posing as a sort of fair process advocate.
