The unit needs replacing in about 12 months time. It would be a like-for-like replacement. Same product and just swap it out. The replacement cost is about $200.

There is no change in my requirements or supports here. It's simply purchasing a piece of assistive technology that requires replacement for safety reasons.

However, I've been told simply buying a replacement and swapping it is not permitted.

Instead, I need to approach an OT for a home-based assessment, who must then prepare a report recommending the smoke detector be replaced. This report is costed at about $400.

So the new smoke detector is no longer $200. It's now $600. All because of bureaucratic procedural bullshit.

THIS is why the NDIS costs so much. Stop putting the blame on participants relying on the NDIS for supports just to live their fucking lives.

#NDIS

Reply to Due to my disability, I have a smart smoke detector at home. on Wed, 22 Apr 2026 09:30:55 GMT

@<bdi>andyb@mastodon.au</bdi> why would you need an OT to replace a smoke detector??
