You can `brew install homebrew/cask/basictex` if you want a smaller install. But that won't help you if you have some other install that depends on `mactex`. It's annoying, because AFAIK most of the bloat comes from PDF documentation, but not the hill I'm going to die on.

Big lists of huge packages to pull down. I ended up spinning up a Docker container on a server at home as a dedicated LaTex install
