Very impractical and super bad.
Could this be fixed in coming versions of Mastodon, like in the main code/protocol if there is one?

Certainly in the Mastodon web UI, a reply post inherits the visibility setting of the post being replied to.

But it is a client behavior, and there are lots of broken clients out there.
