In 2020, a devastating fire destroyed the rest of the site. Miraculously, the chapel survived almost untouched.

These photos are from before the fire. I also visited after the fire; much of the vaulted ceiling had collapsed. I need to edit and upload this second set of photos!

  • chapels (including probably this one) tend to stand alone
  • this particular building seems to be mainly made of stone instead of some more (in)flammable material

I love the pictures, but I hate clichés like "miraculous."

If you ever want to explore beyond Europe, Turkiye has centuries of abandoned places waiting — Roma churches, Syriac monasteries, Ottoman mansions, forgotten caravanserais. A lifetime of material. Most of are from 4th and 5th centuries.
