I've seen some oblique references to Debian making an effort to make OpenRC more viable as an alternate init system. That's about all I've gathered on my hit-n-run timeline surfing the last several days. Not sure if this is an official Debian project or just someone's wish list.

Anyone have the skinny? Links to actual discussions?

As a rather casual desktop user, I haven't encountered yet any use case that actually requires systemd's power features, so far I could get by with OpenRC or sysVinit just fine.

"...systemd is not (merely) an init system. It's way, way more than that."

This is the basic problem with systemd. It is trying to not only be an init but also be the userland of the target system.

I'm not going to rant here with all the tired examples of why systemd sucks. It just does and no one will change my mind about that.

It was the minimally diplomatic choice because they knew there would be a backlash if they said "we're systemd-only and we won't support other inits at all".

Stuff like implementing an independent fork of varlink and multiseat support would go a long way towards defanging the argument that "if you want feature X, systemd is the only game in town".
