I tried these bikes at the Alberta Velodrome and am really impressed at how well they work. And agree, I'm not sure how good they'd be on the street- not sure one way or the other as the velodrome surface is really unique. As well the reference bike used a belt and I used a chain.

I just learned how to use one of these bikes. The biggest difference is the drive wheel doesn't freewheel. When I stop pedaling the pedal keep going unless I stop them. That stops the drive wheel as well braking the whole system.
If you want to brake the front wheel;
