Library books or books borrowed from friends: mark page with scrap paper or receipts

My own personally owned books: book open upside down if briefly interrupted mid-read, or dogeared page if setting aside book for later

Yes, I misuse my own books barbarously, but at least I follow civilized custom with books that are not mine!

And then a lot of numbers are close to one of those, so there is a hook to remember them. Or if not numerically close, they might have similar sets of digits. Like 69 is one of the famously funny numbers, so 269 is also memorable. Stuff like that.
