What could go wrong, indeed?

After the catastrophe, the reaction of #USSR authorities was blatantly poor. #Communists tried to conceal the event and its impact (while rumours, obviously, started to circulate), and in particular, refused to cancel the demonstration of #May1st in #Kyiv. And don't fool yourself, it was not a kind of intrinsically protest demonstrations (as if any other ones made any sense in a free country) you can see them now on #1May in free world, it was a state event, act of #communism idolatry (and yes, if you had decided to fail to appear, the authorities would have QUESTIONS). So yes, they literally pushed people under radioactive fallout for the sake of their deadly ideology.

In #Ukraine, there is an opinion that Chornobyl disaster was one of the nails in the coffin of the #soviet nidus. Hard to say, but it remains a toxic scar on beautiful Ukrainian Polissja, which will poison the nature for centuries.

Reply to Regarding #Chornobyl / #Chernobyl / #Chornobylj , let me remind a couple of things which people abroad may fail to remember. on Sun, 26 Apr 2026 16:39:47 GMT

@torf
russian drone also damaged the new confinement of the ChNPP block 4, about a year ago; no matter if by accident or on purpose.

gemelen@mammut.moe

Reply to Regarding #Chornobyl / #Chernobyl / #Chornobylj , let me remind a couple of things which people abroad may fail to remember. on Sun, 26 Apr 2026 15:36:26 GMT

And it's not exactly a history. In 2022, #russian troops captured the plant during the Battle for #Kyiv, and, in particular, dug trenches in the infamous Red Forest.

In 1986, it was a forest of conifer trees near the #Chornobyl power plant, which absorbed so much of radioactive matter, that died out on the roots and later turned red (therefore Red - or Rusty - Forest). The trees were buried to prevent spread of radioactive dust.

So far, it is not clear if anybody died from this insanity, but signs of excavation were found. Together with shelling of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, I am sorry to inform that we still live next to people who don't mind to deliberately trigger an ecological disaster for the sake of their silly interests. It looks like we indeed shall abstain from #nuclear energy, not because it is somehow extra dirty, but because we don't deserve that power to be placed in the hands of man.

torf@c.im
