If you take Linux as an example, it never really had a moment. It just quietly inveigled it's way into almost all server side systems. It's just better, so in time, it won out. It can take a lot of time though, and there is always the risk of being extinquished by the dark forces. The general population has done an extraordinary job of moving from the disorganized, original 90s internet to the corporate-owned, everybody's happy because there's somebody to bitch about corporate internet. For instance, when the flaw was discovered in TLS 3.0, did someone call the the Head of Web to ask for a statement? No, because there isn't one. There are people who worked on the protocol; there are people who implemented it, but they're all different people all over the world. That is true of Mastodon as well and AT Proto in general.

Do you remember back in the 2010s, when if you talked to a non-technical user, they would often say, "Well, I opened Google on my laptop and looked it up." You say, "So do you mean a web browser? Do you know which web browser?" They go, "Web browser?" With a question mark. That's the kind of thing we're dealing with now in social media. The general public and much of the tech industry just assume that any given social network is a site that is controlled centrally. That just isn't the case with Mastodon, so it's a sea change and will be hard to communicate.

sempf@infosec.exchange

Reply to They do realize that was ONE mastodon server, right? on Thu, 23 Apr 2026 03:45:21 GMT

Tagging https://infosec.exchange/@securityaffairs

@mastodonmigration @Sempf @Pierluigi_Paganini

boblefridge@mastodon.nz

Reply to They do realize that was ONE mastodon server, right? on Thu, 23 Apr 2026 03:14:28 GMT

@Sempf @Pierluigi_Paganini

Yes, they know better.
DDoS and Corporate Communications - Mastodon and Bluesky

Apparently Mastodon and Bluesky social media networks have been the targets of sophisticated DDoS attacks over the last week. This post is not about these attacks per se, but rather about the deficient job both networks have done communicating what is going on, that has left users and the media largely in the dark.
