Many machines do have a tap to pay by card though.

If people want to accept cards, and they generally would because otherwise people like me won't have any cash on them to give them, they have a POS-terminal, sometimes a QR code, or just give you their card number written (I paid for greens at a produce fair today by shaking my phone and picking one of the names, but that's specific to this particular bank, and I've never done that before). Convenient, but weird, and only 3 numbers and 2 taps involved.
But _installing an app to pay_? What kind of barbaric place that island is!
